Semmalar Annam on Mayilaa, Motherhood, Metaphor and Women’s Solidarity

Semmalar Annam talks about motherhood, repression and spiritual release in rural Tamil Nadu, and how “Mayilaa” grew from personal experience into a story of women’s solidarity and freedom.

At the 2025 edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, debut director Semmalar Annam presented “Mayilaa” in the Bright Future section, marking a significant milestone in her journey as a filmmaker. As she shared during our conversation, having her first feature premiere at Rotterdam was nothing short of a dream fulfilled.

“I’m feeling very great,” she said, reflecting on the experience. “This is my childhood dream, to become a filmmaker. My first film got selected in the Bright Future section, so it means a lot to me.” She also recalled the emotional connection with the audience, particularly during live screenings, where laughter and reactions made the experience unforgettable

From Constipation to Metaphor

The inspiration behind “Mayilaa” began from a deeply personal place. Annam explained that the initial spark came from an incident involving her young daughter, who was suffering from constipation at the time. As a new mother balancing responsibilities, Annam began to imagine how a woman in a rural setting would cope with similar struggles while also dealing with economic and emotional burdens.

Gradually, the physical condition evolved into a metaphor. Just as constipation represents something stuck within the body, Annam began to see parallels with the emotional and social constraints experienced by many women in rural Tamil Nadu. Through conversations with women in villages, she encountered numerous stories of toxic marriages, suppressed desires, and limited freedom. “I wanted to create freedom for those who don’t have that freedom,” she explained.

In this way, Poongodi’s journey in “Mayilaa” becomes not just a personal struggle but a broader allegory for women seeking release from deeply rooted social norms.
